A long time ago (well, this past weekend) in a galaxy far, far away (umm...Chicago), a representative from Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars would be coming to Blu-ray. Nerd liaison Steve Sansweet made the pseudo announcement at the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo on Saturday.

Lucasfilm's Director of Fan Relations said at C2E2 (the name itself sounds like a Star Wars droid) that a set of all six films from the saga would be coming to the hi-def Blu-ray format. Here is the quote as reported by IGN:

"We have been at work for a couple of years working on—I won't call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff—but, a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material. We're finding all kinds of scenes from dailies that have never been seen before. Beyond all of those things that you know about... there are some real treasures."

If you're a huge Star Wars geek like me, your next five questions are probably: 1. When? 2. When? 3. When? 4. Original theatrical or special edition trilogy? 5. When?

None of those were apparently answered. Sansweet did say, "We're not ready to announce exactly when it's coming out, but it won't be in the too distant future."

Yeah, this is what you call an obvious rumor. It's only natural for a Star Wars Blu-ray. In fact, Cinematical claims that Lucasfilm has been planning a Blu-ray release since 2007.

Even with Blu-ray's slow and steady growth, the format really needs to have Star Wars. Perhaps I'm biased but I think it would further propel Blu-ray adoption. It was #1 on Screen Rant's 10 Movies That Need a Blu-ray Release. (Plug, plug: it was also on my predictions for this year.)

What do you think? Are you interested in Star Wars on Blu-ray? More appropriate to my theory, if you don't already own a PS3 or Blu-ray player, will having Star Wars available in the format encourage you to finally buy one? Send in your thoughts.
