For fans of the bat, Christmas will come a little early this year as Warner Bros. announced today that The Dark Knight will debut on DVD and Blu-ray on December 9. The box office behemoth, barring a miraculous box office push in the next two months, will officially be the second biggest title ever to hit home entertainment.

The title, approaching $525 million at the U.S. box office, trails only the $601 million that Titanic gained at the box office before its 1998 debut on home video. It is possible that The Dark Knight could surpass Titanic after its home entertainment bow as Warner Bros. previously announced that it would re-release The Dark Knight in theaters this upcoming January in time for awards season.

The two-disc special edition DVD and two-disc Blu-ray offering will have separate artwork. The DVD version focuses on Heath Ledger's Joker, while the Blu-ray is all about Christian Bale's Batman.

The special features include over three hours of added goodies including a look at the creation of the movie with director Christopher Nolan, two documentaries into Batman's psyche and his arsenal of weapons and look at the revolutionary IMAX scenes.

The suggested retail price of the special edition DVD is $34.99, the single is $28.98, while the the suggested retail price of the Blu-ray disc is $35.99.
