Movies about the Messiah go back to Hollywood's earliest days. Featuring elaborate staging, faithful costuming, and heartfelt performances, these films bring to life the power and passion of the Son of God.

THE PILGRIMAGE PLAY: During his imprisonment, the Apostle Peter tells two poor souls the inspiring story of Jesus Christ. What they learn turns them away from the wages of sin...The Pilgrimage Play is the filmed version of a play about the life of Christ that was staged every year at the Hollywood Bowl for decades. The venue meant that many of Tinseltown's best and brightest took part in the annual presentation. Historical events such as the Last Supper and the Sermon on the Mount were faithfully depicted year after year. Roland Reed Productions filmed this 1949 performance in full color with Frank Strayer behind the camera. The prolific Strayer directed over 80 movies, including 12 entries in the popular 'Blondie' series starring Penny Singleton. He also made the horror films The Monster Walks (1932) and The Vampire Bat (1933). This was star Nelson Leigh's ninth season in the role of Jesus. Other actors who reprised their roles from previous years include Stephen Chase, Leonard Penn, and Richard Hale. Initially only meant for church screenings, The Pilgrimage Play had a short second life on the art house theater circuit.

THE SAVIOUR IS BORN: A full-color retelling of the birth of Christ, with dialogue taken from Biblical texts. Produced and directed by Harry S. Webb, a skilled director of Westerns and serials.
