Mandela, My Dad and Me Inspired by the spirit of both Nelson Mandela and South Africa, film star Idris Elba released mi Mandela, an album of South African music that profoundly influenced him as he prepared to portray the iconic figure in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Arrangements were made to record an album in South Africa and Mali, but just as Idris was about to start work, his father, Winston, passed away, leading him to dedicate the album to both Mandela and his father. Elba asks BAFTA award-winning director Daniel Vernon to document this period of his life as he deals with grief, works on the album and promotes the movie. The film was originally intended to focus on the recording of the album, but it evolved into something far deeper. Mandela, My Dad and Me not only documents one mans struggle in producing his first album, but also his emotional quest to pay a fitting homage to the two men who had inspired him most.
