Upper-Middle-Class resident of Martha's Vineyard, Chase (Mirren) has a breakdown, and her husband Richard (Bridges) tries to bring his family back to together by hiring Elizabeth (Sedgwick), a Mother's Helper. Chase dislikes Elizabeth, but a strong bond between the two women develops, which ultimately leads to destruction
