In defeating the Oregon Ducks 42-20 in the championship game of the inaugural College Football Playoff at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on January 12, 2015, the tradition-rich Buckeyes (14- 1) won their sixth national championship in school history. The national title was the third for 50-year- old Head Coach Urban Meyer, who was born in Toledo and grew up in Ashtabula, Ohio.

In a game played in front of 85,609 fans and a television audience of 33.4 million viewers watching on ESPN, one-time third-string quarterback Cardale Jones played like a seasoned veteran. Making only his third collegiate start, Jones threw for 242 yards and a touchdown and repeatedly used his powerful 6-foot- 5, 250-pound frame to gain tough-to- get first down yardage.

But he got plenty of help from Ezekiel Elliott, a sophomore who ran for 246 yards on 36 carries. Elliott also scored four touchdowns en route to being named the offensive MVP. It was a memorably historical night for Buckeye fans whose revered team - which finished their championship season ranked 4th in offensive efficiency and 16th in defensive efficiency - proved they were the true champions of college football.
