Searching for the Northwest Passage — The Story of Sir John Franklin... In 1845, celebrated British explorer Sir John Franklin, along with his crew of 128 men, set sail from England in search of a fabled passage west, which they believed would lead them to the riches of the Orient. None of them were ever seen again. A search party found no evidence of any crew or wreckage. The answer to the mystery was eventually solved by John Rae, a lone doctor travelling the Arctic Circle on foot. His findings were so horrific that those back home — including Sir John's widow, Lady Franklin, as well as Charles Dickens — waged a public campaign to discredit Rae and subsequently incriminate an entire nation of Northern Inuit people.
