Paramount is on quite the shopping spree for the biggest actor in its stable. Last week, Paramount acquired the rights to "The Lost Regiment" for Tom Cruise. This week, Paramount made a move on David Gold's novel "Carter Beats The Devil" on behalf of Cruise's production company.

"Carter" follows the true life events of famed magician Carter the Great. The events cover a period of 25 years from Carter's first magic show through his greatest performance in 1923. It was not clear whether Cruise himself would play Carter, a contemporary of Harry Houdini.
