'The Force Awakens' leads AFI's list of best films in 2015

Star Wars: The Force Awakens doesn't even open for another 24 hours or so, but it's already made a list of the top 10 films of 2015. And not just any list, this list is put out by the American Film Insititute (AFI) and honors the ten best American films of the year.

While the AFI has been known for their lists since their very first "100 Years...100 Movies" list in 1998, they have only been doing an annual listing of the best films for the last decade or so. The AFI honors ten films and ten TV shows each year and the honorees are selected by juries from each respective field.

This is officially the first honor for The Force Awakens as Disney did not screen the film for critics before this week and the AFI purposely held back the announcement of their list until their judges could see the film. The list is a diverse one that really covers most of the spectrum of genres, well save for comedy, but I tend to believe that's more a reflection of this year's lack of comic gems to choose from.

Here is the full list in alphabetical order.
