Kevin Smith is no stranger to controversy. And now, it appears that some off-the-cuff remarks made about the ending to Planet Of The Apes have ruffled feathers again.

According to Smith, via postings on his ViewAskew web site, he joked that the ending was eerily reminiscent to a comic strip panel that he wrote for his 1999 comic book series "Jay And Silent Bob" (see image above) and that he was contemplating legal action. His sarcasm, unfortunately, was lost on the emotional void of the Internet and it eventually got back to Tim Burton, who erroneously thought that Smith's litigious sentiments were genuine.

Burton responded by slamming Smith, "I do not read comic books. And I especially wouldn't read anything that was created by Kevin Smith."

Smith's retort? Nothing official yet, but word has it that there's a spoof of Planet Of The Apes in Smith's next movie, Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, due out in theaters on August 22.
