I knew that today was the day that we'd finally get our first full-length glimpse at X-Men: Days of Future Past, but I never expected a trailer quite like this. As with most comic book movies, you expect the trailers to be filled with action and big explosions, especially the first trailer. Think of it as the little flourish that gets your attention sort of like a magician who then uses sleight of hand to pull off his little trick or illusion.

But there were no tricks or illusions in this trailer, only tears and a melancholy soundtrack that remind you that this isn't going to be some groovy flashback ala X-Men: First Class. No, this time, it will be different.

Thanks to Peter Dinklage and his Sentinels, all of the X-Men are united against a common enemy and must turn to the past where Charles Xavier has abandoned all hope. It doesn't take a spoiler warning to deduce that this is the time period immediately following his crippling event. I highly doubt that the film will go into much detail about Lucifer and the events that led Professor X to a life confined in a wheelchair, but one thing is clear, this is a much different, darker Charles Xavier than what we saw in X-Men: First Class.

All of the heavyweights are here, including a graying Wolverine which just adds to the somber tone of the trailer. All in all, I can't wait for May 23 to get here so I can see this film.
