Everyone this morning seems to be talking about MTV's Video Music Awards. Whether it was the 'NSync reunion or Miley Cyrus' outrageous performance, the event from last night is the current hot topic.

Meanwhile, I'm so old that I didn't even know it was on, let alone watch. I'm a child of the '80s and quite literally grew up watching MTV. You know, back when they actually showed music videos and had a reason for a Video Music Awards show.

I saw the replay of Miley trying to channel Madonna. Perhaps it is my old age but I just don't get it. If you missed it like I did, here's the video:

For the uninitiated, the guy Miley is um... dancing with is Robin Thicke. He's the son of actor Alan Thicke and actress/singer Gloria Loring. He also happens to be married to Paula Patton. I couldn't quite place the black and white, vertical-striped suit he wore last night but then it hit me:

Thicke was clearly channeling poltergeist Beetlejuice. Perhaps that explains why Miley Cyrus looks possessed.

Weekend Box Office

Theaters were extremely cold this past weekend. No, I'm not talking about their $8 air conditioning. The box office results were tepid at best. Lee Daniels' The Butler held onto number one with an estimated $17 million while We're the Millers was still high at $13.5 million in second place. The biggest new film, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, only managed $9.3 million. It was the smallest top opening film since last Dec. 7-9 when Playing for Keeps pulled in $5.7 million in its opening frame.

All those MTV teens will be going to their cineplexes this weekend. The concert film One Direction: This is Us debuts on Friday as does action-thriller Getaway co-starring triple threat Selena Gomez. If you want more mature fare, try the crime-suspense film Close Circuit starring Eric Bana.

Batfleck

There's still fallout from Warner Bros. casting of Ben Affleck as the next Batman in Man of Steel II: Superman vs. Batman. Would you believe that nearly 70,000 people have signed a petition to get Affleck removed from the role? Settle down, folks. It's not like they are adding nipples back to the Bat suit.

The rest of us have moved on. There is already talk of who will play villain Lex Luthor. Apparently people liked Bryan Cranston's bald head in Breaking Bad and have made him the top choice. Cranston does have a Batman connection. He voiced Commissioner Gordon in the animated film Batman: Year One.

And In Other News

In case you didn't notice the byline above, I will be replacing your regular MMM host John for a few weeks. John is taking some time off as he and his wife are expecting their second child any time now.

As I am want to do, I'll try to shake things up in subsequent installments. Maybe we'll do something completely different next Monday. You'll have to check back a week from today to see exactly what I mean. MUWAHAHAHAHAHA!

So until then, mix well!
