'Dragon Tattoo' DVD disc art mirrors Lisbeth's personality

You might feel like you've been swindled by Lisbeth Salander herself when you open The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo DVD or Blu-ray. Don't fret though, Sony is just playing along with the themes of the film itself.

The confusion stems from the DVD disc art inside the package. The discs resemble DVD-R discs and the film's title scribbled in what appears to be a Sharpie marker make it seem as though the disc itself is a burned pirated copy of the movie.

Rest assured though, Sony is just having some fun with its marketing. They wanted to "better reflect the theme of the film and its popular protagonist, Lisbeth Salander" with the unique art work. But, it seems that some people who have gotten advance copies are crying foul.

The film releases on DVD and Blu-ray on March 20 and Sony is hoping to head off a slew of consumer inquiries by getting the word out now. You can check out the artwork below.

This isn't the first time that unique DVD disc art has caused consumer confusion in the market place. You might recall that the Borat DVD also tried to elicit the pirated effect. Although, as you can see below, their attempts were pretty obvious compared to the latest effort from Sony.

What do you think? Should studios focus more on making quality films and less on cute marketing gimmicks? Or do these sort of tricks make you more likely to own the film on DVD or Blu-ray?
