In Whedon we trust: 'Cabin' won't be your regular horror flick

I have to level with you dear reader. I was late convert to the House of Whedon. But just because it took me decades to get with the program doesn't mean that I'm not an ardent devotee.

Oh no, I'm as solid as they come in terms of support for the Joss man and by association I also watch pretty much anything that Drew Goddard touches. Interestingly, I discovered Goddard from his work on Lost, but I grew to appreciate his awesomeness when my wife finally made me watch Buffy.

I like everything that these two have done separately, but I love what they've done together. But I'll be honest, I was a little in the dark about the upcoming The Cabin in the Woods.

I knew the basics. Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard were working on it. Regular Whedonites Fran Kranz and Amy Acker were involved as well, but beyond that, I just assumed what everyone else thought.

The Cabin in the Woods would simply be yet another installment in the tired and overplayed slasher horror genre. A group of nubile kids would go a cabin in the woods. They would make stupid mistakes. They would get naked and then a serial killer will pick them off one by one.

Even the tagline from the poster over there on the right "You think you know the story" didn't dissuade us from what we knew. Not even blind faith in Joss Whedon could overcome our prejudice to the title.

But then this trailer came down the pipe.

One thing is for certain. Anything that we thought we knew about the movie was completely wrong. I hate to hazard a guess, but I'm thinking this movie will fall more along the lines of the Hostel movies than traditional slasher flicks.

It's clear that this group of kids have been lured into a trap and they can't escape. As a really bad horror movie from the '80s would have said, "Death is their only escape."

The Cabin in the Woods will start scaring up business on April 13, 2012.
