GBU: It's a Miracle, Arthur got a Tattoo

It's baaaaack!
I know that it's been awhile, but the much beloved and little known about series is back with three new trailers that dropped this week.
It seems that the rush is on to make sure that the important holiday films coming out in the next couple of months have their best foot forward. It's funny, sometimes you know exactly where some trailers will fit among the "Good, Bad and Ugly" spectrum.
Other times, you hold an expectation and are completely surprised by the end result. A good case in point for this is this week's GBU offerings.
If you would have told me that Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski and Kristen Bell were making a little film set in Alaska, I would naturally assume that hilarious hijinks were sure to come. Sadly, I was disappointed, in a big way.
But why spoil the fun? Let's jump right in and see how this week's trailers stack up.
THE GOOD
Last year, we got our first glimpse of Arthur Christmas and while I was intrigued, I have to admit that I had pretty low expectations for the project. It's funny what a difference 10 months can make.
Maybe it's my impending fatherhood and the need for more family values in my life, but I thoroughly enjoyed the full-length trailer that dropped today from Sony Pictures. I mean it's an Aardman Animations property, so I always held out some sort of hope it would be decent, but honestly I was unsure.
Needless to say, I'm now fully on board.
THE BAD(ASS)
I'm a huge David Fincher fan. I think Trent Reznor's scores are some of the most haunting ones in film today. I thought Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy of books was amazing.
So, when they all came together in a new movie, my expectations level were through the roof. I mean, this movie can't possibly live up to them, can it?
That remains to be seen, but so far I would have to say that they are.
Today, Sony Pictures released a new international trailer for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and it is chock full of Trent Reznor awesomeness.
Last week, Sony brought out this theatrical trailer and it's quite a stretch different than most theatrical trailers out there. Clocking in at almost four minutes in length, the trailer gives an extended glimpse at the complicated plot and some argue that it gave away too much.
To that end I counter with the argument that most people interested in this movie have already read the books or have seen the original Swedish adaptation films. In other words, they weren't spoiled, but enjoyed soaking up Fincher's interpretation on the subject matter.
THE UGLY
For all the good trailers out there, bad trailers must exist or otherwise we wouldn't have something to compare them to. This trailer is one of the bad ones.
No, bad would actually be a compliment for this trailer. It's quite possibly in the running for worst trailer of the year.
I really hate seeing all this good talent go to waste, but alas that's the case. I'm pretty shocked that the movie is called Big Miracle and not something like Free Willy 22: Electric Boogaloo.
Is it wrong that I was actually cheering for the whales to eat Drew Barrymore? I mean that can only help this movie, right?

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a December 21 release.
Big Miracle hopefully drowns at the box office on February 3, 2012.
