Back in 1998, Johnny Depp brought Hunter S. Thompson's Raoul Duke to life on the big screen in a psychedelic trip that did the author's protagonist proud. Now, a mere 13 years later, Depp is delving back into Thompson's Gonzo journalism with The Rum Diary.

The film's development shares a history that is almost as long and illustrious as the novel upon which it is based. Hunter S. Thompson wrote The Rum Diary in the early 1960s after spending some time as a journalist in Puerto Rico. However, the book wasn't published until 1998.

If you've been a long-time fan of our site, you might remember this little gem that we wrote on The Rum Diary back in 2003. The twist then was that Depp was going to re-team with his Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas co-star Benicio Del Toro who would also take on directing duties.

A lot has changed since then, but Johnny Depp remains as the connective tissue between the two Hunter S. Thompson projects and I think you'll agree after seeing the trailer that there isn't anyone else better suited for the role.
