According to Box Office Mojo, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is already breaking overseas records with its foreign opening on Wednesday and the only question left to answer is will the last movie in the incredibly successful franchise set a new opening weekend box office record here in the United States.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is opening on over 11,000 screens at 4,375 theaters. It has generated a record $32 million in advance ticket sales and looks poised to surpass Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 for the highest grossing opening weekend in the Harry Potter franchise. Last year's volume set the mark at just over $125 million.
The all-time record for a three-day opening weekend is $158.4 million set by 2008's The Dark Knight. While Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is trending to open close to that number, Tim and I couldn't agree on an exact number. He thought it would open with $135 million while I was banking on the increased 3D fees to take it up to about $165 million.
Split the difference and you have our poll question that you will find below. Will Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 surpass $150 million this weekend? The poll closes at noon on Saturday, check back to see the results and again on Monday when we learn the actual answer.
