You know it's officially awards season, when we post not one, but two stories about nominations in the same week. This time, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association woke up early this morning to announce their nominees for the 68th annual Golden Globes Awards.
In keeping with their tradition, the Hollywood Foreign Press struck out on their own and shunned other movies completely, despite being lauded by other organizations. As the leading contender to the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes is always seen as the fun, crazy uncle of the awards season as their show is known for its liberal flow of alcohol and relaxed atmosphere.
The Golden Globes is also one of few shows that separate out Comedy and Musical movies from more traditional awards fare that typically fall into dramatic territories. That's not to say that they ignore dramas, as the very dramatic The King's Speech led all films with 7 nominations. To show how counter culture it can be, by contrast this week's Critics' darling Black Swan, which nabbed an overwhelming 12 nominations for the Critics' Choice Awards, only secured four Golden Globe noms.
But perhaps the most surprising snub came in the form of the Coen brothers' latest opus True Grit, which nabbed a whopping 11 Critics' Choice Awards nominations. It did not get a single nod for a Golden Globe. Perhaps the Hollywood Foreign Press Association needs to add a Westerns category?
One chap who can once again look forward to the Golden Globes is Johnny Depp, who scored twin nominations for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his roles in The Tourist and Alice in Wonderland. Perhaps this year's double nom makes up for the lack of nominations in 2009 and 2010. Prior to that, Depp had been the darling of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association being nominated each year since 2004.
Speaking of the quirks of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, is it me or did the terms Comedy or Musical get lost in translation? The last I checked they did not mean action movie with the occasional laugh or suspenseful thriller so bad that you will laugh out of sheer boredom. But somehow, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association managed to categorize Red and The Tourist as such.
The Hangover, now that's a comedy.
The Golden Globes will be handed out in a telecast on Sunday, January 16, 2011. Meanwhile, the granddaddy of them all, the Academy Awards nominations won't be announced until the Golden Globes are all handed out. The Academy will announce their nominations on January 25, 2011. The Oscars will be handed out on February 27, 2011.
