On Wednesday, Kevin Smith wrapped his latest movie Red State and the ever-inventive filmmaker, who edited the movie over the course of the 25 day shoot, actually screened a "complete with credits and some pre-mixing" cut of the film at the wrap party on Friday. And today, on Halloween, Smith gave his fans a great treat, the teaser poster for Red State.

Smith tweeted the link to his blog Silent Bob Speaks where the passionate filmmaker expressed his love of his new project and discussed the poster in more detail. Apparently, the teaser poster was created by Red State producer Jon Gordon's assistant Melissa Bloom, who was on set for the entire production.

It seems that Red State is shaping up to be more than a vanity project for Smith as he waxes about the real family spirit behind the film and the genesis of this poster. One thing is for certain, for Smith Red State represents a departure from his safe zone of dick and fart jokes, but he will always be first and foremost a filmmaker who embraces his fans and trusts in their support.

As one of those aforementioned fans, the image is both haunting and evocative for me. Like Smith, I share a Catholic upbringing and the real horror of the extreme evangelicals depicted in the movie will most assuredly elicit a level of uncomfortableness that might be akin to The Exorcist.

In other words, I can't wait to see it. As it stands, I'll have to wait until sometime next year at the least as Smith now enters the phase of shopping for a release date. For a higher resolution shot of the poster and the rest of Smith's blog, click here.
