I have long had a love affair with classic cars in action movies. One reason I wanted to see 2002's XXX with Vin Diesel was because the 1967 Pontiac GTO had a co-starring role. What that movie did for the GTO, this fall's Faster does for the classic Chevelle.

Dwayne Johnson ("The Rock" no more) stars in this revenge and gasoline-fueled action flick. The 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is his ride of choice. For my money, the car overshadows Johnson in the trailer.

CBS Films has just released three new stills from the film. You can get a glimpse of this classic muscle car in two of the three. (Coincidentally, ICMDB reports that the ol' GTO makes a cameo in Faster as well!) The teaser trailer is also below for your viewing please, but first, take a gander at the official synopsis:

After 10 years in prison, Driver (Dwayne Johnson) has a singular focus -- to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched robbery that led to his imprisonment. Now a free man with a deadly to-do list in hand, he's finally on his mission... but with two men on his trail -- veteran cop (Billy Bob Thornton) just days from retirement, and a young egocentric hitman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) with a flair for the art of killing and a newfound worthy opponent. The hunter is also the hunted. It's a do-or-die race to the list's finish as the mystery surrounding his brother's murder deepens, and new details emerge along the way hinting that Driver's list may be incomplete.

Faster hits theaters on Nov. 24.

Correction(s)

Thanks to a tip from reader C.J., it seems the Chevelle in Faster is a 1970 model rather than 1971.

Tim, the Chevelle in the new D Johnson movie is a 1970 SS, not a '71. The '71 chevelle has two headlights, not four. See link.

Uh-oh, looks like we have a car debate starting. Unfortunately that's a subject I can't claim any authority on. Thankfully we have excellent readers like C.J. and Darel. Darel offers a response to the two-headlight issue of '70 vs. '71 Chevelles.

You simply cant tell what year the chevelle is because it has the front end of a '70 and rear end of a '71, '72. The tail lights on a '70 are two square-ish lights. On a '71 and '72, they are the four round tail lights which I personally favor and is why I bought the '72 model. Its actually common. I have a '71 front end on my '72. But for hollywood effect, Im sure it will be referred as a '70 for it was at its peak with horsepower.

While I'm no expert on body styles, I am loving this classic car talk. If you have anything to add, let us know.

I think we can all agree that this movie is going to rock.

Final Word on '70 vs. '71 Chevelle (?)

The pictures from the film on the IMCDB site support Darel's contention of a '71. However, if you read the comments on that page (presumably from the site admins), it tells the true tale: the car in the movie is a hack job. It's a 1971 or 72 Chevelle with a '70 front end.

This is one of those rare times when both sides of an argument are right! (Though I wouldn't call this an argument, per se. Just fun.) Thanks again to both C.J. and Darel.
