We constantly rail on Hollywood's over reliance on remakes. The big studios would rather repackage old projects than give us something original, it seems. Hundreds of Star Wars fanatics have decided to do something about it -- join together to create their own remake!

Star Wars: Uncut has 472 fans each remaking a 15-second portion of the classic. People are using a variety of techniques to re-envision the film. From the following trailer you get a glimpse of just a few. Many of the scenes seem to use either the low-budget "Sweding" technique made popular with Be Kind, Rewind. Others feature stop-motion animation with a wide variety of props, but mostly Lego.

Of course the project has its rules. You can't include the music and they encourage you not to use the original audio. Your 15-second segment must match up with the original so the assembled movie will flow smoothly.

At the time of this posting, 286 pieces of the movie have already been completed. All the slots have been claimed but those people only have 30 days to complete their scene or it goes back up for grabs. Talk about a rough production schedule!

Apparently you can remake a scene if it someone else does it as well. There's no mention of how they'll choose which one to include but I assume it'll come down to a community vote.

Obviously this is not a commercial endeavor. The goal is to celebrate a classic which has touched so many lives. As a hardcore Star Wars fan myself, I can't to see the final film. There's no word of an estimated completion date on the site.

If you could pick just one small piece of Star Wars to remake yourself, which would you choose? I think I'd like to do the part where Obi-wan cuts off the dude's arm in the cantina. Send in your choice and opinion on this industrious endeavor.
