Golden Globes bestow nominations on a bunch of movies you haven't seen yet

Dec. 11, 2008.

It's not even my birthday yet, but believe it or not Hollywood's awards season got kicked off to a quiet start this morning when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its nominees for their annual Golden Globe awards. The Golden Globes, usually a strong barometer for Oscar success, is also a trend setter with their awards structure in that they honor dramatic and comedy/musical movies in separate categories.

Movies that haven't released theatrically led the way as Doubt, Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button all snagged five nominations each, while other box office behemoths were virtually ignored.

The biggest grossing film from 2008 and second all-time, The Dark Knight, only received a single nomination for Best Supporting Actor in recognition of the late Heath Ledger's turn as The Joker. Ironically, Titanic, the highest grossing film of all time, tied a record for most Oscar wins with 11 and most Oscar nominations with 14. It won four Golden Globes among eight nominations.

Two actresses snagged double nominations when Meryl Streep was honored with a nomination for Best Actress in a Drama for her work in Doubt and Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical for Mamma Mia!. Kate Winslet, who is no stranger to Golden Globes (she has five previous nominations and no wins -- what did you think I was talking about?), brought home two more for Best Actress in a Drama for Revolutionary Road and Best Supporting Actress for The Reader.

The Golden Globes will be handed out at their annual relaxed atmosphere in Los Angeles on Jan. 11, 2009, a full 11 days before the Academy Award nominations are announced. Last year, the Golden Globes ceremony was a victim of the writers' strike with a hastily put together news conference serving as the announcement platform of the winners.

This year, the champagne will flow once more and it will surely provide us with some classic and candid moments of our favorite stars. The full nominations are listed below:
