Not your average 'Joe' celebrity baby

Remember the days when naming a child was a simple thing to do? You picked a family member that meant something special in your life and you went with it. Or you decided to grace your offspring with the name of your beloved favorite athlete or movie star.

As the saying goes, the times are a changin', and no where do you see that change more evident than the, umm, unique names that celebrities come up for their little offspring. Ever since Frank Zappa cornered the market on odd kid names with such classics as Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan, Moon Unit and Diva Muffin, celebrities have trying to one up each other with the bizarre, the unfortunate and the downright mean.

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore were only getting things started when they decided on Rumer, Scout and Tallulah Belle. And don't forget Sylvester Stallone who must have a secret crush on Superman or never got past the Sesame Street episode which was brought to you by the letter "S." His children Sage Moonblood, Seargeoh, Sophia Rose, Sistine Rose and Scarlet Rose all share the familiar first letter.

Speaking of the Man of Steel, It's no secret that Nicolas Cage is a big fan after naming his son Kal-el, the birth name of Superman. While we're on the subject, it seems that Penn Jillette (he of Penn and Teller fame) has doomed his daughter to life of crime fighting when he named her Moxie CrimeFighter.

But, don't think celebrities don't have a sense of humor. Rob Morrow named his daughter Tu. Yes, as in The Sun will come out Tu Morrow.

If that wasn't enough to give kids a reason to hate their parents look at this long list of bizarre names:

  • Kyd, David Duchovny and Tea Leoni
  • Pilot Inspektor, Jason Lee (he and his girlfriend Ceren Alkac are expecting in the Fall)
  • Audio Science, Shannyn Sossamon
  • Apple, Gwyneth Paltrow
  • Rocket, Racer, Rebel, Rogue and Rhiannon, Robert Rodriguez (again with the alliteration)
  • Gaia Romilly, Emma Thompson
  • Fuchsia, Sting (I wonder what her favorite color is)
  • Memphis Eve, Bono (I guess "Pride (In the name of Love)" was already taken, either that or he was correcting his lyrics after all these years)

At this point, I'm sure that you're all asking what brought on this little diatribe. Well, over the weekend the latest celebrity baby naming bar was raised when Jessica Alba welcomed Honor Marie Warren into the world. It's not the first baby to be given a wishful trait as a name. Cher and Sonny Bono opted for Chastity, John "The Cougar" Mellencamp wanted a little Justice, Ving Rhames searched for a little Freedom while Barbara Hershey and David Carradine just wanted their child to be Free.

Believe it or not, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I didn't even have time to mention Erykah Badu and her Seven Sirius and Puma kids. Yep, celebrities are different from you and I that is true.

So, what do you think? Are celebrities getting a little carried away with the unique name thing? What other names did I inevitably leave off the list? Tell us your favorite or defend the Cocos and Sailor Lees of the world.
