I've said numerous times before that, as a kid, I was nothing if not a lover of Marvel Comics. The X-Men character of Wolverine was always at the tops of my affection for everything in the Marvel universe.

Wolverine was rude and crude. He had the retractable, razor-sharp claws. He had weird facial hair. He was the most resilient superhero ever. He was mysterious. In short, Wolverine was a badass.

Hugh Jackman filled the character to a tee in the three X-Men movies. Now Jackman gets a shot at his own solo film in the character. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is, just as a sounds, the prequel story for the beloved comic antihero.

The story, alluded to in X2, is about Logan/Wolverine's involvement -- against his will -- in the Canadian government's project to develop superhuman soldiers. This story is known as Weapon X in the comics.

Jackman tells USA Today that Wolverine won't be the only mutant in the movie. Wolverine's nemesis Sabretooth, played in the first movie by Tyler Mane, "is going to play a big part in it. And there will be a good bit of cameos." Liev Schrieber is rumored to be playing Sabretooth in the new film.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is expected in theaters on May 1, 2009. I, for one, can't wait.
