"Haaaave you met Ted?"

CBS TV show How I Met Your Mother is one of those shows that proved that there is life after death for the sitcom. It's a witty, smart comedy that captures the Friends motif, but updates it with a turn of the century sense of humor.

As good and fresh as the TV series is, the initial DVD offering did not "suit up" as Barney would say. That's not to say that it's not worth of a view for fans and newcomers alike, but one viewing will accomplish everything.

For those of you unfamiliar with the show, the premise starts in the year 2025. A father is talking to his children and shares the story of how he (wait for it) met their mother.

Bob Saget provides the voice of future Ted and adds credence to a show that is mixed with new faces and established talent. Alyson Hannigan and Neil Patrick Harris are the familiar faces and Josh Radnor and Cobie Smulders are the talented newcomers who really carry the show as the main characters of Ted and Robin.

The one shining moment of the DVD offering is the Video Yearbook featurette. The 15 minute or so feature gives great insight into the show from the stars and the creators. The only other special feature of note is the blooper reel which is funny, but at times a little too self-congratulatory.

In the end, the DVD set for the complete first season of How I Met Your Mother is a worthy companion to the show, but one that is better served as a rental and not a purchase. The absence of deleted scenes and more Barney content make this DVD just a wee bit lacking.

Recommendation: Rent It
