J.J. Abrams, known for his groundbreaking work in bringing fresh shows like Alias and Lost to network television, has agreed to breathe new life into the Star Trek franchise. Variety is reporting that Paramount has tapped Abrams to produce, write and direct Star Trek XI.

The story for Star Trek XI wil revolve around the first meeting between Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock at Starfleet Command and their first excursion into Outer Space. Abrams' directorial debut Mission: Impossible III is set to debut in theaters in two weeks.
