Britney Spears gets married in Vegas

In news totally out of leftfield, Britney Spears reportedly got married early Saturday morning in a quickie Las Vegas ceremony. It was first reported by People.com and then corroborated by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Who's the lucky guy? Apparently it's childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander (no, not that Jason Alexander) from Britney's hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana. Rumors say the two have become reacquainted recently and spent New Year's Eve together.

The event went down at the Little White Wedding Chapel on the infamous Las Vegas Strip. People.com says Britney wore a baseball cap and jeans. She was even escorted down the aisle by a hotel bellman from The Palms -- the same bellman who chauffeured them to the courthouse to get the marriage license.

Obviously this was a spur-of-the-moment event and, even more obviously, it followed a long night of partying, so says People.com. The web site also quotes a source close to Britney that this was a joke that "went too far" and she plans to have the union annulled.

We never thought Britney could top her wild antics in 2003 (highlighted by the Madonna TV kiss), but she has certainly kicked off 2004 with a bang.
