Sony Pictures Entertainment has achieved a rare feat indeed. This week, the studio surpassed the $1 billion mark in U.S. domestic box office grosses for 2003 - the second time in as many years that the studio has been able to break the billion dollar barrier.

Last year, many critics pointed to Spider-Man and its $400 million take and dismissed the upstart studio despite its market share victory in 2002. While Sony has passed the market share baton on to perennial market share champ Buena Vista (Disney) this year, it has grown into a serious heavyweight studio.

And with the highly anticipated Spider-Man 2 coming next year from Sony, it looks like they will be a contender for many years to come.
