Fox gives 'X2' a longer title, 'LXG' a shorter one

The sequel to the 2000 X-Men movie starring Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry is now titled X2: X-Men Unite, says Fox. Apparently this is the solution to their vague promotional title of "X2" versus others' reference to the film as "X-Men 2". X2: X-Men Unite opens May 2.

The title also hints at the movie's plot in which throngs of the uncanny mutants defend their academy against a military attack. We were kind of hoping they would use the title of the comic arc which provided the basis for the screenplay, "God Loves, Man Kills".

Since they were lengthening this title, it seems Fox decided to cut back on another. The League is the new title for "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". This film also used a hip, abbreviated promotional title. The Sean Connery action film was referred to as "LXG" in trailers. The League arrives in theaters July 11.

Ironically, The League also has its basis in comic books, but one not nearly as famous as Marvel's X-men.
