When your writers hit a snag, who ya gonna call? Why, Kevin Smith, of course. At least, that's what execs at Dimension have done. Indie icon Kevin Smith, auteur of such comic gems as Mallrats and Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, has been called in from the bullpen to assist on Scary Movie 3. According to Smith, "Our aim is to make this third in the franchise as funny as that other hysterical third-in-the-franchise flick The Godfather Part III."

As you might recall, late last week Dimension announced that the creative team behind the Scary Movie franchise (collectively, the Wayans family) had jumped ship to Sony to film a rival spoof movie. They were quickly replaced director David Zucker, who sat behind the lens of a few small movies such as Airplane!, The Naked Gun and BASEketball, and a writing team anchored by Smith protege Brian Lynch. After confirming that star Anna Faris was still on board, Dimension announced today that comic genius Smith would lend his skills as both a writer and an executive producer. Smith also executive produced the little seen Good Will Hunting for his buddies Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Scary Movie 3: Episode I - Lord Of The Brooms, a spoof of popular science fiction and fantasy epics, is scheduled to be in theaters in the early Fall of next year.
